The Minor Arcana Tarot Cards - How To Interpret Each Suit

By Antonio Vizzarri

The minor arcana takes the broad universal themes of the major arcana and brings them down to show how these themes effect us on a daily basis. The everyday drama that we experience in terms of activities, emotions, and other daily concerns are represented here in the minor arcana cards.

The 56 cards in this set are divided into 4 different suits. They look a lot like our modern day playing cards. Each of these suits represents a specific approach to daily living. The suit names are Cups, Swords, Wands, and Pentacles.

The Wands are the suit of action, movement, and creativity. The adventure of the journey, risk taking, and excitement are the main elements of this suit. Reflecting the opposite of the Cups, Wands are associated with the element Fire. Symbolizing masculine aspects, they are akin to the yang in Chinese philosophy. The dancing flame of the fire and the energy and excitement it produces makes it a terrific symbol of the Wand suit. It brings out the passion in one's every day activities.

The Cups are the suit of spirituality and feelings. Our current relationships and inner most thoughts are represented here. This energy flows inward towards us. The element Water is represented in the Cups suit and is closely linked to the female yin as represented in Chinese philosophy. Water's natural ability to flow in all directions and fill up empty spaces makes it the perfect representation of the Cups suit.

The Wands are the action and creativity suit. Taking risks, the excitement of the journey, and action are the primary focus of this suit. The opposite of Cups, this suit symbolizes the masculine yang in Chinese philosophy and is associated with the Fire element. The energy and excitement of the flickering flame is an ideal symbol of the Wand. It brings out the passion in one's every day activities.

The Pentacles represent our material matters, common sense, and security on a daily level. They represent physical world around us and how we relate to it. They symbolize the element Earth. The Pentacles stand for the prosperity and wealth we can achieve on all levels. Some people call them the Coins suit because they represent the exchange and acquisition of the material things we need on a daily basis.

The minor arcana suits have unique qualities of their own. All of these suit qualities are experienced by each of us on a daily basis. A tarot reading can help explain how these suits are affecting your life at any given time.

The suits should look familiar; they are very close to our modern day playing cards. They run from Ace to Ten and then there are four court cards. The King and Queen court cards are represented in the tarot and modern day cards. The other two are a Knight and Page. There is no Jack. These court cards symbolize a unique energy within their suit. - 42572
